Is there anything that is known to cause the styles dropdown not to change its selected value to reflect the cursor position in the editor.

I can select an element in the editor I know is enclosed in a particular tag such as H1, H2 or P but the styles dropdown box will not change to reflect the selection.

This does work properly in other pages we have use the control on, I was putting it down to the fact I am populating the default styles at runtime and to test this theory I changed it back to being declaratively defined using the <Style> tag but the problem remains, any ideas?
