Hello, my name is Tom and I am software developer. My company currently has an install base using EO.Web Controls 7.0 (7.0.53.2 (2009) - Build 2009.0.53) and we have a valid license (Order# 2590067668).

We would like to continue development using this same version however, I recently changed to a new computer for development that is running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, and I cannot get this version to install properly (I made sure Visual Studio 2005 was not running at the time).

The install package hangs there with the “Installing Visual Studio 2005/2008/2010 integration” popup displayed (there was also a brief error beep sound). Via Windows Task Manager I killed the install package but was not able to kill the background Microsoft Visual Studio application that the package launched I guess to use some automation or something. When I rebooted my machine to kill this process I noticed come kind of error dialog briefly show up that I could not read in time (Probably associated with beep sound I encountered during installation attempt.

Again, we would prefer to keep using version 7.0 if we able to.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, assuming you have a fix or work around for me, I would also need a refresher on how to re-license your product on my new machine.

Thank you very much in advance

Best Regards,
Tom Karnik

Hi,

That error message is usually a "Visual Studio failed to load package xxxxx" message. We've seen it a lot but MS doesn't seem to care about it. The current version uses a slightly different approach and it may work better; It also adjusted the time out value during that stage so it will time out faster --- I believe your version will time out eventually as well. So if you wait long enough (5 minutes, I believe), it will eventually pass (giving up).

You can try to wait longer first and see if it passes. If it passes, you will get a message box that says failed to install to VS toolbox at the end of the installation. You can just close it and then follow steps outlined here to manually add the controls back to VS's toolbox:

http://www.essentialobjects.com/doc/1/installationanddeployment/install.aspx

The current version does have several advantages over your version beside the installation. The most important ones are new controls and new browser support (particularly IE 9). IE 9 broke a number of things and it's only fixed in the current version.

Thanks!

Thank you for the quick response. For now I'll go ahead and see if it times out.

If we do decide to upgrade to a new version, does this upgrade cost anything if we only use the web grid control at this time and is it fully backwords compatible?

Again Thanks!

Hi,

Yes. It does cost you. ; ) When you purchase a license, we provide free upgrade for one year. Your order was placed on September 2009, so the free upgrade expired on September 2010. For any version after that you will need to place an upgrade order. Currently we offer 50% off for upgrading from your version.

The new version is fully backwards compatible.

Thanks!
