I know it's possible to set up a custom template for the uploader, but is there any way to change the appearance of the inputplaceholder element so that it would, for example, appear as just a button with specific styling and no input box next to it?

Hi,

You can make it appear as a toolbar button:

http://demo.essentialobjects.com/Demos/AJAX%20Uploader/Upload%20from%20ToolBar/Demo.aspx

Note that you can not simply customize the InputPlaceHolder and keep other elements (such as file list or upload button, etc). You can only make it to appear as a toolbar button. You can then customize the toolbar's appearance to make it look like whatever you would like it to look like.

Thanks!
