Is there any way to clear the currently selected item for the tree view (preferably on the client side)?

I'll explain why I might need this:

I want a tree to show a hierarchy of records. Next to the tree I will have an "add" button, which will add a record under the currently selected node. However, if I want to add a record at the root, I am unable to do this, without clearing all selected nodes.

I don't really want to have a dummy node as the root, I'd like the top level of my hierarchy to show there if possible. This is why i'd need a "clear selected" button, since you can't seem to clear the selected node by clicking around the tree.
