Does EO.Pdf have the option of rendering PDFs with pdf tags embedded? Currently I see no way to do this, and the rendered pdf fails Adobe Reader's accessibility check (Edit | Accessibility | Quick Check).

Thanks

Hi,

No. I do not believe so. Traditionally PDF file is all about rendering -- for example, a PDF file can contain all the instructions about how to draw a very good looking letter on the screen but does not contain any information about what that letter is. And that's what made PDF file so popular because it is able to reproduce high quality output across different systems and devices.

However most PDF files nowadays contains information about the text itself because otherwise you would not be able to copy any text out of the PDF file. When we convert an HTML file to a PDF file, we get the text information from the HTML file and embed that into the PDF. This allows text to be copied from the PDF file. Since this feature is essential to almost all users, almost all PDF files nowadays support this.

Later something like "tagged PDF" was introduced by Adobe. This is meant to maintain more information than just the text in the PDF file. For example, structured data such as paragraphs are maintained. Some PDF file supports this, some does not since it does not have much practical use.

A good screen reader can handle any PDF files with just the text information without any structure information quite fine. However Adobe Accessibility Check checks for the structural data in the file. Based on our experience this information has very little practical use. It feels more like something Adobe tries to push as a "standard" in an attempt to extend PDF file into something beyond its traditional role as a presentation tool, for example, as a data exchange tool. Most users do not see it this way or do not care about this. As such we do not support this part either.

Hope this gives you enough background information on this issue.

Thanks!

Thank you for the confirmation. We have a major client that requires "tagged PDF" files for 508 compliance, so we will need to use another product to produce them. Thanks again.

Hi,

You are very welcome. Sorry about not being able to meet that requirement at this time. Please feel free to let us know if there is anything else.

Thanks!
